Marine veteran to speak on 50th anniversary of attack on US spy ship in Mediterranean

Marine staff sergeant and Silver Star recipient Bryce Lockwood (retd) will give a public talk “Secrets of the Attack on the USS Liberty” on June 22 at VFW Post 7397, 9550 Pflumm Road, Lenexa, Kansas, at 7 p.m. He will recount his personal experience on board the Liberty when it was attacked and almost sunk in June, 1967 by air and naval forces of Israel. 34 Americans died and 172 were wounded. Reasons for the attack have never been fully investigated.

A recipient of the Purple Heart as well as the Silver Star for heroism, Lockwood was a Russian language expert on the USS Liberty, a naval intelligence ship sailing in international waters in the eastern Mediterranean on June 8, 1967, when the ship was strafed by Israeli jets and bombed with napalm. Torpedo boats then attacked, putting a torpedo in the ship’s side. The attackers jammed the ship’s radio channels and machine gunned firefighters and life rafts, contrary to international law.

Why did Israel attack an unarmed naval intelligence ship sailing the American flag? Why did the U.S. Navy launch and then recall fighter-bombers sent to defend the USS Liberty? Why did the U.S. government not pursue a full and thorough investigation of the attack?

Bryce Lockwood, the only Marine survivor of the attack, has spent 50 years pursuing answers to these questions. He will recall his experience that day, describe what has been learned in recent years by the declassification of government documents, and discuss some of the unanswered questions that remain.

Lockwood’s talk is free and open to the public.
