What: New Summer Dance Intensive FREE for High School Students When: June 5-June 30, 2017; 7:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Where: Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts, 4747 Flora Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri 64110 Contact: Pam Hausner, Director of Marketing, 816-471-6003, ext. 4; pam@kcfaa.org May 15, 2017 New Summer Dance Intensive FREE for High School Students KANSAS CITY, MO.—Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey, in partnership with Kansas City Public Schools, is offering a 4-week summer dance intensive from June 5 - June 30, 2017 for students in grades 9-12. This new Summer Dance Intensive will focus on ballet, modern, body conditioning, hip hop and jazz dance technique classes in addition to repertory classes. Students will participate in two technique classes daily in addition to learning choreography for a performance at the end of the session. The students will obtain one high school fine arts credit for participation. All students will be given a Summer Dance t-shirt to wear with their required dance attire. In-district transportation as well as breakfast and lunch will be provided for students. Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey Chief Artistic Officer, Tyrone Aiken, is the Summer Dance Program Director. Choreographer, teacher, dancer and arts administrator, Aiken began his dance training at the Cultural Arts Center and the Eglevsky School of Ballet on scholarship. He is also a graduate of the Ailey School’s Certificate Program in 1983. Aiken began his professional dance career with the Cleo Parker Dance Ensemble in 1983. Aiken’s choreographic credits include works for Dance Institute of Washington, “Kwanzaa” performed at the Kennedy Center, “Summerland” commissioned by Dance Theater of Harlem’s Virginia Johnson. In Kansas City, Tyrone has choreographed for The Lyric Opera, The Coterie Theater, The KC Symphony, Wylliams/Henry Dance Theatre, KC Ballet and the KC Rep.
As Director of Artistic and Educational Programs Aiken created AileyCamp the Group in 1995, Setting the Stage in 1997 and a second AileyCamp serving Kansas in 2000. As Executive Director Aiken successfully launched KCFAA’s move to the 18th and Vine Jazz District in 2007 and lead KCFAA through a strategic plan with Michael Kaiser creating a new Festival and Symposium series. Aiken received a Pinnacle Award for Arts excellence from the Johnson County Library, Neighborhood Hero Award from Bank of America, the Robert A. and Dr. Phyllis Bernstein Humanitarian Award from the Jewish Family and Children Services and traveled to the White House to accept the Coming Up Taller award presented to KCFAA for AileyCamp.

Artistic Instructors for the Summer Dance Intensive are Elaina Levingston and Latra Wilson. Zendrick Brendt is Administrator. Elaina Levingston is a Kansas City, MO native. Levingston is very versatile in her dance forms and styles. Levingston is trained in Modern, Ballet, Hip Hop, Jazz, Tap, and African and has performed in works by the well-known Frank Gatson and Trae Turner. Levingston has participated in workshops with renowned choreographers such as Debbie Allen, Shayne Sparks, John Silver, Jamaica, and Chris Tyler. She is an Ailey Camp alumnus (Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey), and has worked for KCFAA and Ailey Camp Chicago. Latra A. Wilson, a native of Tyler, TX began her dance training at The Dance Factory under the tutelage of Pamela Erwin and Thersa Bryce-Cotes. She then went on to study at the University of Missouri-Kansas City where she graduated with a BFA in Dance. Wilson has had the distinct pleasure to train as a scholarship recipient at The Center Dance, Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, and Tisch Dance Summer Festival. She has worked and performed with Taylor 2, Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey, Wylliams/Henry Contemporary Dance Company, Earl Mosely Diversity in Dance, Iluminate Artist of Lights, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis’s production of “The Kiss” and world premiere of “Champion”, Owen/Cox Dance Group and Broadway Dance Lab Cycle 2. As a teaching artist, Wilson is currently working with KCFAA, Youth Arts Academy and Alvin Ailey Arts in Education. In addition she just signed with McDonald Selznick Associates, also participating in various productions with The Box, Queen of The Night Late Night and Company Stefanie Batten Bland in NYC.
