Thousands Arrive in Kansas City to Compete at Enactus US National Exposition

Kansas City, MO – May 8, 2017 – Students from more than 100 colleges and universities are about to converge on Kansas City for the Enactus United States National Exposition.

Hundreds of senior Executives from America’s most well-known companies will be on hand May 21-23 at the Kansas City Convention Center, including The Hershey Company, Hallmark Cards, Inc., Bimbo Bakeries USA, Post Consumer Brands, Schwan’s Food Company, Synchrony Financial, Walmart Stores, Inc. and Unilever, as the students compete to be recognized as the 2017 Enactus United States National Champion.

Student teams will showcase entrepreneurial projects that demonstrate the ability to spark business innovation, improve livelihoods and deliver meaningful social impact. In addition, recruiters will compete aggressively to attract students from this exceptional talent pool during a Career Fair on May 22-23, and in some cases offer jobs on the spot.

The three-year bid won by Kansas City last fall to host the Enactus United States National Exposition will generate a multimillion-dollar economic impact on the region, according to Visit KC. Drawing about 2,700 students, business and government leaders, it will bring in an estimated $2.6 million in 2017, $3.3 million in 2018 and $3.4 million in 2019.

Area regional champions that have advanced to the Enactus United States National Exposition include:

•Central Methodist University, Fayette, MO •Drury University, Springfield, MO •Evangel University, Springfield, MO •Southwest Baptist University, Bolivar, MO •University of Missouri – Kansas City, Kansas City, MO •Kansas City Kansas Community College, Kansas City, KS •Pittsburg State University, Pittsburgh, KS •Southwestern College – Kansas, Winfield, KS

The University of Missouri – Kansas City Enactus team has been collaborating with members of the City Council of Kansas City to develop business relationships in China. This has resulted in a trade agreement between Kansas City and the Chinese city of Changsha, a commitment from Chinese cities to promote the growth of Kansas City startups, and a trade summit being planned for fall of 2017. The project has the potential to create millions of dollars in revenue for Kansas City. Click here to see a video thank-you note to UMKC from Mayor Sly James.

Winners of the competition will take home $10,000 in prize money and a chance to represent the United States at the 2017 Enactus World Cup Sep 26-28 in London, England.

“Kansas City was home to our exposition from 1999-2006 and again in 2012-2013, and we appreciate the tremendous support as we return,” says Alex Perwich, President of Enactus USA. “The city’s vibrant business community and entrepreneurial spirit serve as the ideal backdrop for the Enactus National Exposition. We see ourselves as part of the plan to attract talent and business to Kansas City.”

In addition, recruiters from the nation’s top companies will be scouting for talent, including recruiting firm Robert Half. According to a recent Robert Half survey conducted with Enactus, Generation Zers value job security and are more likely to stay with a company longer, with most expecting to be part of an average of only four companies throughout their careers. Seventy-seven percent of Gen Zers surveyed strongly believe that hard work contributes to their job satisfaction.

“We’re finding that new college graduates are entering a healthy job market, but competition is fierce, with many entry-level professionals applying for the same jobs,” says Paul McDonald, senior executive director of Robert Half. “In this environment, the management and real-world work experience students acquire through Enactus provides a significant advantage. Through Enactus, students learn to take initiative and focus on results, while also contributing to their communities. This perspective and experience can make them stand out to potential employers.”
