Altrusa Participates in Good Deeds Day

Kansas City – Altrusa International of Greater Kansas City joined the global movement of doing good on April 2 – Good Deeds Day! Good Deeds Day is an annual tradition of good deeds. All over the world, hundreds of thousands choose to volunteer and help others, putting into practice the simple idea that every single person can do something good, be it large or small, to improve the lives of others and positively change the world.

Altrusa International of Greater Kansas City chose to recognize this special day of service by reaching out to teens housed at Mother's Refuge. The mission of Mother's Refuge is to provide a safe home for young moms and babies. Six Altrusans provided pizza, cookie baking, and books on Good Deeds Day to eight teens and three babies. While the teens enjoyed pizza, Altrusans took turns holding babies. While the cookies baked, 100 baby board books were distributed at Mother's Refuge and time was spent reading to the babies.

The mission of Altrusa International is to improve communities worldwide by providing service, developing international leadership, fostering international understanding, and encouraging fellowship through an international network of dedicated volunteers. The Greater Kansas City Club has been serving the metropolitan area since 1942. Its members are passionate about service projects to benefit the community.

Good Deeds Day was initiated in 2007 by businesswoman and philanthropist, Shari Arison, and launched and organized by Ruach Tova (NGO), a part of The Ted Arison Family Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Arison Group. “I believe that if people will think good, speak good and do good, the circles of goodness will grow in the world. Good Deeds Day has become the leading day of giving and this year individuals, school children, students, soldiers and employees from many businesses are joining in for the annual Good Deeds Day with the aim of doing a good deed for others,” says Shari Arison. Good Deeds Day 2017 motivated 2.5 million volunteers in 93 countries to go out and do something good. Altrusa International of Greater Kansas City, Inc. was happy to be a part of the 2017 Good Deeds Day event.
Inspired by Thoreau, Altrusan Mamie L. Bass put it best: ?t is not enough to be good; Altrusans must be good for something.? In addition to increasing their repertoire of service across the country and world, Altrusa Clubs have launched extensive membership efforts to welcome interested citizens to join us in our campaign for change. Members are drawn from all cultures, from all age groups, and from all economic standings, with a common thread of wanting to give back.
