In honor of President Truman’s birthday (May 8, 1884), the Historic Independence Square will feature several events Saturday, May 6 starting at 10am.

Gilbert Whitney & Co Hosts Harry’s Birthday Brownie Baking Contest Truman’s favorite dessert was brownies. Bring in your freshly baked brownies on Saturday, May 6 to Gilbert Whitney & Co. to be judged and win a prize. Each person who enters the contest will receive two free movie tickets to The Pharaoh Cinema 4. First place winner: $50 Independence Square Association gift certificate; Second place winner: $25 Independence Square Association gift certificate; Third place winner: $15 Independence Square Association gift certificate. Tour the Harry Truman Courtroom and Office Stop by the Visitor Experience Center inside the Historic Jackson County Courthouse. Ambassadors can help you plan a customized Truman tour of Independence! Tour the Courthouse to learn about Truman’s time as presiding judge.

Retrace His Steps at Clinton’s Soda Fountain Order Harry’s favorite cold treat, a butterscotch sundae with chocolate ice cream. Encounter a young Truman working the shop as he did at age 14 in 1898.

The Pharaoh Cinema 4 Exclusive Showing of “Truman” Catch the award winning HBO movie, “Truman”, starring Gary Sinise as Harry S. Truman. For only FIVE BUCKS, you can see the movie, filmed right here in Independence, and get a 32 ounce popcorn. Tickets are available at the theatre box office at 114 W. Maple Avenue, Independence, MO 64050.

PLUS: Admission to the Truman Library & Museum, Truman Home, National Frontier Trails Museum, Vaile Mansion, Bingham-Waggoner Estate, Chicago & Alton Depot and 1859 Jail and Marshall Home will be just ONE BUCK ALL DAY.

National Parks Service reps will host special guided “Truman Walking Tours” through Independence starting at the Truman Home at 219 N. Delaware Street. You can walk the route Truman walked.

Independence Square Association merchants will also offer “buck” specials throughout the day.
