Penwell-Gabel to host renowned author and grief counselor for free community workshops

Author, psychologist and grief counselor Dr. Alan Wolfelt will give two free workshops on April 11-12. For the past 10 years, Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home has partnered with Dr. Wolfelt to offer free grief support. Wolfelt is the founder and director of the Center for Loss and Life Transition in Fort Collins, Colorado and faculty member of the University of Colorado Medical School’s Department of Family Medicine. He has also been a guest on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “The Larry King Live Show” and the “NBC Today Show.” “Dr. Wolfelt does a great job navigating individuals through the grief process. Olathe is fortunate to have the opportunity to experience him here,” said Bennie Smith, managing funeral director at Penwell-Gabel. This year, Dr. Wolfelt will share tips to help people understand the process of grief, mourning and healing. The first workshop, entitled “Exploring the Need to Grieve & Mourn: Helping Yourself, Your Family, and Your Friends Heal,” is on April 11 from 7-9 p.m. at Embassy Suites Kansas City/Olathe on 10401 S Ridgeview Road. This community workshop will focus on and teach participants how to: •Define the concept of “convalescence” in the context of grief and mourning •Explain the difference between grief and mourning •Describe unique influences on the grief experience •Understand six universal needs of mourning •Explain the concept of “reconciliation” of grief

Wolfelt’s second workshop, entitled “Exploring the Paradoxes of Mourning: Enhancing Your Understanding of Three Forgotten Truths,” is on April 12 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at the same location. The second session is especially illuminating for professionals such as therapists, nurses, clergy and social workers. Both seminars are pre-approved for continuing education credit by the Kansas State Board of Mortuary Arts, Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board and Kansas State Board of Nursing.
The workshops are sponsored by Penwell-Gabel, a family-owned company with funeral homes, crematories and cemeteries throughout Kansas. The owners Ren and Theresa Newcomer continue a four-generation Tradition of Caring® that began in 1893. To register, visit or call 866-918-9708.
