Ninth Annual Juneteenth Parade and Celebration set June 8 in KCK
Kansas City, Kansas- May 26th, 2014- The annual Juneteenth Parade and Celebration will return with barbecue and greens competition, a car show, local vendors, and tons of family friendly entertainment. This two day event will be held at on June 13th and 14th at Big Eleven Lake on 11th St. & Waterway Drive.
The Juneteenth Planning committee is at it again presenting the 9th Annual Juneteenth Parade & Celebration. The committee is comprised of local Kansas Citians who have a passion for community action. The committee, lead by Victor and Sandra Harris, has remained together since 2005 to fulfill the mission of educating the community of its rich history and supporting the theme of "Diversity is the key...it begins with me".
Juneteenth commemorates the 19th of June 1865, when General Gordan Granger rode into Galveston, TX and informed the state of the ending of slavery. Since there was a delay in news of the Emancipation Proclamation being signed two and a half years prior a grand celebration was definitely in order.
The event will start on the evening of June 13th with a prayer vigil by the committee as a light and positive introduction for the following day. After the vigil bands will proceed with music for the rest of the evening as the organization prepares for the next big day.
Saturday, June 14th, will begin with the parade which starts on 7th & Quindaro at 10am. The parade will feature a cancer walk, bands, step teams, floats, mobile and walking units. The parade will head west to 18th St., to Washington, and on to Big Eleven Lake for the celebration.
The celebration at the lake will have a barbecue and greens competition with aromas that will have your mouth watering. A car show will have all makes and models of cars, trucks, and motorcycles for those with a need for speed and eye for beautifully crafted motor vehicles. There will also be information vendors with tons of helpful information for the community along with other food, crafts, and business vendors. Performances on the main stage will begin at noon with choirs, poets, praise dancers, and other family friendly entertainment that will have you out of seat busting a move.
In its ninth year the parade and celebration has continued to grow and is always bigger and better each year. The committee strives to provide a safe and family friendly environment great for all ages. It is a free event that aims to bring together the community to celebrate a joyous moment in history and the progress that has been made.
The Juneteenth Parade and Celebration Organization is still accepting entry forms for the parade, celebration, barbecue and greens competition, car show, and vendor booths.
