EMS documentary to be screened at UMKC School of Medicine

UMKC School of Medicine to Host "Freedom House" Documentary

Kansas City, MO – May 20, 2014 – In celebration of National Emergency Medical Services Week, UMKC School of Medicine’s EMS Education Program will host a screening of the documentary "Freedom House, Street Saviors".

"Freedom House" tells the story of some of the nation’s first paramedics. In the mid-1960s, residents once deemed ‘unemployable’ were trained to render medical aid in the Hill District, one of the roughest neighborhoods of Pittsburgh, PA. The 90-minute documentary traces the origins of this ambulance troop, its triumphs, and its ultimate demise through racial tension and politics.

Appearing with the screening will be producer Gene Starzenski, and one of the Freedom House paramedics, George McCary. The documentary will be shown on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. in Theater A of the School of Medicine, 2411 Holmes Street. Admission is free.

Mr. Starzenski and Mr. McCary will be available to the media for questions. Please contact the EMS Education program to arrange a meeting.

The UMKC School of Medicine EMS Education program provides initial Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Paramedic education, as well as continuing education to the Kansas City metropolitan area. Classes are held on the UMKC Hospital Hill campus.
