J.R. Buckner named President & CEO of First Federal Bank of Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – On April 30, 2014, J.R. Buckner was elected President & CEO of First Federal Bank of Kansas City, one of the largest and strongest mutually-owned banks in the Midwest. Buckner succeeds Clarence Zugelter, who will remain on as Chairman of the Board but retired from day to day operations after 43 years with the Bank.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the First Federal Bank team. I have inherited an impressive management team and one of the strongest financial institutions in Midwest.”

Buckner assumes the leadership of the Bank at a pivotal time not only for the institution but the industry. “The financial industry has seen a number of economic and regulatory changes over the past few years,” said Buckner. “Many of these changes have created new opportunities for First Federal Bank. Our mission has always been to help our friends and neighbors become more financially successful through savings and home ownership and I am excited about the opportunity to help even more families as we grow.’”

First Federal Bank is a mutually owned Federal Saving Bank. The Bank’s mutual ownership structure means the depositors own the bank. “Mutuality means we work for our customers, which gives us a unique perspective most commercial bank’s do not have.” said Buckner. “That means all our profits don’t go to Wall Street they go back to Main Street and allow us to make more loans and better serve our communities.”

Since joining the Bank’s senior management team in 2012, Buckner has focused on investing in technology and employee training to better position First Federal Bank to meet the financial needs of its customer base.

“Our financial strength combined with our unique ownership structure gives us a great deal of freedom to make investments not only in new products and services, but also in training our staff to better help our customers take control of their financial lives,” said Buckner

Founded in 1934 First Federal Bank is now $350 million in assets and operates six full-service banking centers in the Greater Kansas City area and a mortgage loan center in Johnson County, Kansas. The Bank also has a national mortgage loan division, based at its corporate headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri.
