Celebrate National Train Day May 10 at the Santa Fe Station in Lawrence

LAWRENCE – Local railroad enthusiasts and all lovers of railroad lore are invited to join in the festive Lawrence celebration of National Train Day on Saturday, May 10 at the Santa Fe Station, 413 E. 7th Street, Lawrence.

Train Day marks Amtrak’s 7th annual commemoration of the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869. The Lawrence observance, scheduled for 2-3:30 p.m., is hosted by Depot Redux, a local volunteer organization that supports the restoration and redevelopment of Lawrence’s vital link to Amtrak’s long-distance passenger rail service.
The local event is one of hundreds planned nationwide on May 10.

On Saturday, between 2 and 2:30, event participants can register for a door prize of two round-trip Amtrak tickets from Kansas City to St. Louis. The tickets are provided courtesy of Amtrak. The drawing will take place at 3:30, and the winner must be present. Refreshments will be served and free train-related items will also be given away.

At 2:30, railroad historian Dave Calwell of Topeka will speak and demonstrate historic railway artifacts from his extensive personal collection, acquired during a 34-year railroad career. He will give a show-and-tell about such items as dining car china, railroad hats and uniforms, lanterns, and slices of actual rails. He will also wear his complete, authentic, original Santa Fe conductor’s uniform.

Lawrence Mayor Mike Amyx will attend and make brief remarks. During the past year, the city received a federally funded $1.2 million grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation. The grant, along with matching funds from the city, will pay for a new roof at the station, as well as new heating and cooling systems, expanded parking, accessible restrooms, and other interior and exterior improvements. Work on the first phase of the project will begin later this year.

Amtrak’s Southwest Chief train, which runs from Chicago to Los Angeles, stops at the Santa Fe Station in Lawrence twice each day. In 2013, more than 7,200 passengers utilized the station. Currently, other Amtrak stops in Kansas are Topeka, Newton, Hutchinson, Dodge City, and Garden City. Nationwide, Amtrak carried a record 31.6 million passengers in 2013.
