Beloved Leader of Band Program Retiring after 28 Years

May 6, 2014, Overland Park, KS: Parents, Students, Colleagues and Alumni to Honor Dr. Marion “Doc” Roberts at Year-End Event

After 28 years of teaching, inspiring and leading hundreds of young musicians at Blue Valley North High School, Dr. Marion Roberts is handing over his baton at year’s end. He will be honored at the school’s annual Concert on the Lawn to be held Wednesday, May 14 at 6PM on the Blue Valley North School grounds, 12200 Lamar, Overland Park, KS. The event is open to the public. Tributes, stories and letters to Roberts are being compiled and can be sent to the school to the attention of Dan Freeman. Freeman has been named Roberts’ successor.

In addition, a scholarship fund in Roberts’ name is being established. To participate, checks can be made payable to: Doc Roberts Scholarship Fund c/o Libby Bergman; 6708 W. 131st Street; Overland Park, KS 66209.

Roberts is an inductee to the Legion of Honor by the John Philip Sousa Foundation and has been selected as “One of Fifty Directors Who Make a Difference” by the School Band and Orchestra Magazine. In addition he has served as President of the Education Association of the Kansas East Conference, President of the Kansas Bandmasters Association and is Chairperson of the Department of Music and Director of Bands at Baker University. Roberts holds a degree in Music Education from William Jewell College, a Masters from Kansas State University and a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from The University of Kansas. He has done additional work at The Universities of Colorado and Texas and doctoral work in Norway.
