Local Toastmaster Elected District Governor
David Whitner, a charter member of Hear Me Out Toastmasters, was elected on April 26 to serve as District 22 Governor, presiding over one hundred Toastmasters clubs across Kansas and Western Missouri. This highest elected office follows terms completed as Lieutenant Governor Marketing and Lieutenant Governor Education and Training. His official duties commence on July 1st, continuing through June 30. 2015. His official training for the role will take place during the Toastmasters International Convention, to be held the third week of August in Kuala Lampur. Malaysia.
Whitner began his involvement in Toastmasters in 2005, with the formation of the chapter which came to be known as Hear Me Out, a chapter focused on public speaking and leadership skills for Gay and Lesbian individuals. "Because the speeches delivered in Toastmasters are drawn from personal experience and interests," Whitner says, “it’s important that one practices those skills in an environment in which one's life experiences are relevant and understood." Of over thirteen thousand Toastmasters clubs in the world, Hear Me Out stands as one of fewer than twenty focusing on the development of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) individuals and their allies.
When asked how he has benefited most from his Toastmasters experience, Whitner responds, "I joined to improve my verbal communication skills and to get rid of some bad speaking habits, but the greatest gift I've gotten is that I have a better understanding of how other people see me. That has been the most valuable part of this journey, and one I look forward to continuing."
