KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Zona Rosa, a shopping, dining and entertainment urban town center at I-29 and Barry Road in Kansas City, has a full list of community events for 2014, some of which are new this year and many returning favorites. When Zona Rosa opened ten years ago, community events and building on the city's traditions were important to creating the image of the new shopping district. Today, Zona Rosa has become known for its incredible family-oriented and charitable events drawing visitors from throughout the city and region, as well as for its resurrection of some of Kansas City's most beloved traditions.

This calendar listing contains a catalog of the community events for 2014 at Zona Rosa. Events may be added throughout the year and times and dates may be altered. Please check www.zonarosa.com for the latest event information.

Kansas City’s Easter Parade Saturday, April 19 Parade at 11 a.m.; Festivities begin at 10 a.m. Zona Rosa’s annual Kansas City Easter Parade is a favorite tradition for many. Each year the community is invited to participate in the beloved Kansas City Easter Parade through the streets of Zona Rosa wearing their Easter best. This free community event features the Easter Bunny, family activities, petting zoo, local dignitaries as well as a best dressed contest for the whole family. (The center is closed on Easter Sunday, April 20.)

Miles for Meals Walk, Run and Senior Crawl Sunday, April 27 8 a.m. Platte Senior Services, Inc. is celebrating its 30th year providing Meals on Wheels and important nutritional, socialization and support services to the seniors in Platte County. Platte Senior Services, Inc. will kick off its anniversary celebration with this 5K run and one-mile walk/senior crawl. Woofstock Sunday, May 4 7:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Join Zona Rosa and Northland Animal Welfare Society (NAWS) for this seventh annual family festival. Woofstock includes a 1 mile dog walk; a dog fashion show; doggie karaoke; live music; pet demonstrations; free microchip identification implantation for pets; giveaways and more. Proceeds from the event benefit NAWS whose mission is to ensure that animals will never be alone, hungry, sick, afraid or in pain. Visit the NAWS website at www.pcnaws.com for more information.

Hillcrest Transitional Housing Annual Walk for the Homeless Saturday, May 17 8 a.m. registration, 9 a.m. walk begins in Town Square This 5K run and family fun walk is an event that raises awareness and funds to support Hillcrest in its mission to transition homeless families to self-sufficiency. Register online at www.hillcresttransitionalhousing.org or at the Zona Rosa Town Square on the day of the walk.

Running with Bonnie and Clyde Saturday, May 24 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. One of the most infamous events in the Kansas City area is the event of July 20, 1933, at the Red Crown Tavern and Tourist Court. As part of Platte County’s 175th Anniversary, “Running with Bonnie & Clyde: The Red Crown Symposium and Road Tour” will examine these events on May 24. The symposium will be held at the KC Improv. An important part of the symposium is a collection of artifacts and documents about the Red Crown affair. Items found after the shootout have been saved as collectibles and include weapons, bullets and items stolen by the Barrow gang. In addition, more than 100 vintage cars and trucks are expected to travel the Platte County roads used by the gang in 1933. An era fashion show is planned as well. Festa Italiana Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 30, May 31, June 1 (Friday 5 – 11 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. – 11 p.m.; Sunday 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.) Zona Rosa is proud to be home to Festa Italiana. This once-a-year celebration transforms Zona Rosa to “all things Italian” and features food booths, a beer garden, vendors, live Italian music, dancers, a kids’ play area and more.

Jazz on Town Square Thursdays, June 5 through Aug. 28 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Bring your blanket or lawn chair (no coolers, please) for the popular free weekly Jazz series at Zona Rosa. Professional local, regional, and national Jazz musicians delight audiences young and old from the stage in the old-fashioned Town Square in the heart of Zona Rosa. Concerts include giveaways and food sampling from Zona Rosa restaurants.

Summer Concert Series Saturdays, June 7 through Aug. 30 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Music continues at Zona Rosa throughout the summer. A variety of musicians and musical styles entertain shoppers and diners at Town Square with free concerts every Saturday evening. See the Zona Rosa website for concert details. Blankets and lawn chairs are welcome, no coolers, please.

Farmers Market Tuesdays, June 3 through Aug. 26 4 to 8 p.m. (or sellout) Savor the taste of the freshest homegrown fruits, vegetables, breads, jams and honey at Zona Rosa’s weekly seasonal Farmers Market. Local vendors offer their finest produce to the community every Tuesday afternoon in the breezeway between Victoria’s Secret and Hot Topic off 86th Street. Soccerpalooza Saturday, June 28 Head to Zona Rosa for the annual soccer celebration extraordinaire, Soccerpalooza. Participate in three-on-three soccer tournaments for children ages 9 to 13 along the streets of Zona Rosa. The interactive event includes clinics and exhibitions for the whole family.

Platte County Fair Preview Day July 12 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Get a sneak peek of the fun and entertainment happenings at the annual Platte County Fair, the oldest continuously operating fair west of the Mississippi River. Stop by Town Square to get a sample of the old-fashioned fun at a traditional country fair.

Corvette Club KC Summer Car Show Saturday, July 26 The Corvette Club of Kansas City will host a car show at Zona Rosa that will display classic Corvettes along the streets of Zona Rosa in and around Town Square.

Sales Tax Holiday Friday, Aug. 1 – Sunday, Aug. 3 Back-to-school shopping at Zona Rosa may be a little easier on the pocketbook during Missouri’s annual sales tax holiday. KidFest Saturday, Aug. 2 Noon – 3 p.m. In August, KidZone gets even better with KidFest! To celebrate back-to-school Zona Rosa produces its annual KidFest event. Check www.zonarosa.com for details.

Microbrew Festival Saturday, Aug. 16 3 p.m. – 9 p.m. The Microbrew Festival presented by UNICO Kansas City, will provide quality craft brews, music and food. Participants will receive a commemorative sampling glass and enjoy four-ounce beer samples from participating breweries. Each brewery will have its own booth to serve some of the highest-rated craft and import beers as well as local and national brews in the world. Advanced tickets to the event will be available for purchase in late July at Zona Rosa’s Guest Services.

All British Car and Motorcycle Show Sunday, August 31 Zona Rosa once again welcomes the All British Car and Motorcycle Show. More than 50 British cars and motorcycles will be on display at Town Square.

Zona Rosa Arts Festival Friday, Sept. 12 – Sunday, Sept. 14 (Friday 5 to 9 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Sunday noon – 6 p.m.) Zona Rosa’s eleventh annual arts festival features the talents of qualifying artists from across the country. The three-day, free public festival showcases a schedule of performances, as well as visual artwork such as photography, painting, sculpture, jewelry and more.

Whisper Walk for Ovarian Cancer Sunday, Sept. 21 8 a.m. The annual 5K walk and run is an opportunity for those who have been touched by ovarian cancer to walk in honor of loved ones and to express their support for research and education efforts. This special event raises money and awareness for ovarian cancer education programs through the Vicki Welsh Ovarian Cancer Fund, a Kansas City-based ovarian cancer awareness non-profit.

A Taste of Zona Rosa, a benefit for the Northland Symphony Orchestra Saturday, Oct. 4 6 p.m. This annual fundraiser benefits the Northland Symphony Orchestra and showcases the artistry of a variety of talented local artists as they exhibit their artwork on violins and other musical instruments. The unique and creative instruments will be displayed throughout Zona Rosa prior to the evening gala. Guests enjoy cuisine from Zona Rosa establishments, live music and an auction featuring the one-of-a-kind instruments as well as a variety of other valuable auction items. Bill Cross Run Walk Harvesters BackSnack Sunday, Oct. 12 8 a.m. This annual race is in memory of local educator and dedicated Missourian, Bill Cross. The 5k walk/run benefits Harvesters’ BackSnack program in the northland which supplies backpacks of food to 2,300 of the 3,900 children at risk of hunger in Clay and Platte Counties.

Stand Up for Synergy Saturday, November 1 6 p.m. The seventh annual Stand Up for Synergy charity gala features comedy by a nationally-known comedian to benefit Synergy Services, raising money for the organization that provides a myriad of services for victims of domestic abuse, violence and families in crisis. Tickets will be available in June by contacting Synergy at www.standupforsynergy.org.

Northern Lights at Zona Rosa Holiday Lighting Ceremony Saturday, Nov. 22 4-8 p.m. Zona Rosa restores a local tradition of using crowns as holiday decor with a variety of lighted crowns featured throughout the center during the holidays. Zona Rosa commences the holiday season with a special lighting ceremony to spotlight the large crowns hung above the streets, as well as the featured Christmas tree in the Town Square. The community is invited to the free program including the official arrival of the holiday Fairy Princess, as well as holiday musical performances, live reindeer and a variety of other children’s activities. The event also features the announcement of Zona Rosa’s Hometown Hero, an annual award given to a well-deserving Kansas Citian.

Kansas City Fairy Princess Saturday, Nov. 22 – Thursday, Dec. 4 Drawing from longtime local traditions, Zona Rosa features the Fairy Princess sponsored by The Kansas City Museum. The Fairy Princess first appeared in Kansas City, Mo. in 1935 in the toy department at Kline’s Department Store during the holidays, and now she has returned to her retail stardom at Zona Rosa. The Fairy Princess arrives at Zona Rosa on Saturday, Nov. 22 as part of the holiday lighting ceremony. She will greet children everyday at Zona Rosa until Dec. 4.

Breakfast with the Fairy Princess Saturday, Nov. 29 Children are invited to meet the Fairy Princess during an enchanting breakfast and tell her their special holiday wishes. The event features holiday entertainment, a child-friendly breakfast menu and a special gift from the Fairy Princess. Advance tickets are required and will be available for purchase by calling Zona Rosa Guest Services at 816-587-8180 after Nov. 1.

PJ Party with St. Nick Friday, Dec. 5 6 p.m. Santa makes his formal arrival at Zona Rosa with a fun pajama party with children at The Grove in the Marshalls building. Families are invited to participate in this free, cherished night with St. Nick featuring fun, food and entertainment for the whole family.

Santa Claus Saturday, Dec. 6 – Wednesday, Dec. 24 Sitting in his traditional storybook scene at Zona Rosa, Santa Claus will listen to children’s Christmas wishes everyday starting Dec. 1. Visit Santa at Celebration Station near The Grove beneath Marshall’s MegaStore. A variety of photo packages are available for purchase.

Breakfast with Santa Saturday, Dec. 6 8 to 10 a.m. Breakfast with Santa at Zona Rosa has become a wonderful family tradition in the Northland. The event features fun-loving, holiday entertainment, a kid-friendly breakfast menu and a special gift from Santa Claus.
