100th Anniversary of founding of Acme Brass

PRESS RELEASE

Acme Brass Custom Plating, Inc. is celebrating the 100th Anniversary of its founding. Acme opened its doors in 1914 when August Hummel began offering his craftsmanship to the Kansas City area. Four generations have served in the shop and today his grandson, Jim Hummel, and his great-grandson, Steve Gaunt, proudly offer the same high-quality metal craftsmanship to businesses and residential customers. Although the name has changed slightly, the business is still very similar.

“We are proud to offer the same high quality craftsmanship that my Grandfather learned apprenticing in the Black Forest of Germany,” Said Jim Hummel. August Hummel learned his craft there as a brass finisher and machinist in the early 20th century. After immigrating with his family to Kansas City, MO in 1901, he honed his skills at a local brass foundry and manufacturing business. On April 15, 1914, he opened the Acme Brass Works.

“Our name says Brass, but we work with so much more,” said Steve Gaunt. From custom fabrication of architectural elements for high end residences, to repair and re-finishing of antique light fixtures and decorative items, we serve a wide range of metal finishing needs. We offer Gold, Silver, Brass, Copper and Nickel plating, plus a wide variety of patina finishes.

While the original location on 17th Street was closed and sold in 2001, Jim and Steve reopened the business blocks away on Tracy Avenue. The new location provides a broader range of services in a remodeled facility.
