Local photographer creates Chinese art
Author Clyde Heppner is one of a handful of fine art photographers to apply principles from ancient Chinese landscape painting to photographic art. The Ancients’ Views book is a series of photographic compositions from the Chinese gardens of Suzhou and the Huangshan Mountains (Yellow Mountains) in China. These locations are magical; not surprisingly, over the centuries, Chinese master painters were often inspired by them and painted them as both artistic and culturally symbolic icons.
Jason C. Kuo, Professor of Art History and Archaeology at the University of Maryland, affirmed, “Heppner has successfully captured the spirit of his subject matter. At some point, I even forgot that an artist who...lives in Missouri has created these photographs. The boundaries between the ancients and the contemporaries, and between China and the West, have been magically blurred.”
The Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, Massachusetts, will exhibit the portfolio April 10th to June 8th, 2014. “It is a privilege to create my work centuries after the ancient masters viewed and painted many of these same landscapes, even though our mediums are different. I feel profound gratitude to follow their process and share my art,” stated Heppner.
Clyde Heppner is captivated by ancient Chinese paintings. He became intrigued after seeing his first painting when he was 12 or 13 and living in Bismarck, North Dakota. He developed a passion for travel, which now takes him to places far different from where he spent his early years. Today he lives in Liberty, Missouri, with his wife and a number of four-legged creatures.
