Raising Eyebrows and Awareness for Colon Cancer in Kansas City

Colon Cancer Coalition and Get Your Rear in Gear – Kansas City look to spark conversations about the importance of colon cancer screening

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (March 13, 2014) ---- To coincide with Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, the Colon Cancer Coalition and Get Your Rear in Gear – Kansas City have purchased eight billboards throughout the Kansas City-area with messages meant to spark conversation about colon cancer, the nation’s No. 2 cancer killer, and the importance of screening colonoscopies.

“I lost my husband, Ryan, to colon cancer when he was just 29,” tells Ginny Goddard, volunteer co-chair for Get Your Rear in Gear – Kansas City. “We need to do everything we can to raise awareness of this disease and encourage others to listen to their bodies and tell their doctor when something is wrong. Had Ryan insisted on a colonoscopy when her first started to experience symptoms, our story could have been much different, but because he was so young colon cancer just wasn’t on our radar.”

Colorectal cancer affects men and women equally, and while about 1 in 19 will be diagnosed in their lifetime, the disease is preventable, treatable, and beatable in most cases. A majority of colorectal cancer deaths can be prevented through proper screenings and early detection as the survival rate of individuals who have early stage colorectal cancer is 90 percent.

This disease is unique because it can actually be prevented through the screening process. During a colonoscopy doctors can find and remove precancerous growths, called polyps, in the colon. Removing polyps can prevent cancer altogether. Early screening also helps find colorectal cancer early, when treatment is most effective.

The fourth annual Get You Rear in Gear – Kansas City will be held Saturday, September 20, at Legend’s Outlet in Kansas City, Kan. Registration and more information will be available at ColonCancerCoalition.org. Goddard and co-chair Kari Lorenzen are planning a happy hour event to cap off the month. “Get Your Rear to Happy Hour” will be held at The Kill Devil Club on March 27 from 5-7 p.m. The evening includes food and beverages specials, prizes and more.

A similar billboard campaign is also being targeted to Wichita, Kan. throughout March.
