Youth Volunteer Corps Offers $500 Scholarship

Kansas City, Mo. – Youth Volunteer Corps’ (YVC) annual Don and Jean Sloan Scholarship, recognizing outstanding community service through YVC, is now accepting applications for 2014.

The Don and Jean Sloan Youth Service Scholarship was established last year to encourage and reward youth public service to their community. This scholarship is awarded annually to a senior in high school or student currently enrolled in a university/college.

The individual must be an active volunteer with YVC who has demonstrated excellence in volunteerism and leadership and who is committed to making a difference in their community. A $500 scholarship will be awarded through Youth Volunteer Corps to the individual chosen.

“My parents showed me the value of giving back to the community, and this scholarship rewards a young person with the same spirit,” Julie Sloan said.

Don Sloan was a member of the YVC board since its inception until he passed away last year. The scholarship was a gift from Don and Jean’s daughter Julie given last year in honor of her parents.

The scholarship was awarded to Zeeyaan Somani, an 18-year-old volunteer with YVC of Calgary, last year.

Preference will be given to Youth Volunteers who have completed at least 100 hours of service during a two year period with any YVC program throughout the U.S. or Canada. Scholarships will be open for application until April 30. Visit to apply.

Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) is a nonprofit promoting a lifetime commitment to service among youth by providing quality service projects for young people. Since 1987, YVC has engaged more than 270,000 youth from diverse backgrounds in year-round service projects serving more than 4 million volunteer hours. 96 percent of youth indicated they will continue to volunteer in the future after their first experience with YVC. Based in Kansas City, Mo., YVC has programs across the United States and Canada. Find more information at
