CinemaKC Celebrates Black History Month with Special Screening Series

KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - 1/20/14 - CinemaKC, a non-profit organization dedicated to showcasing the filmmaking community, will celebrate Black History Month with a screening of a film by a local filmmaker on each of the four Saturdays in February, beginning February 1st at 11 a.m. at Screenland Crown Center Theaters. From portrayals of local institutions like the Mutual Musician's Foundation to animation music to a first-look at Lawrence-based filmmaker Kevin Willmott's new feature, "Destination: Planet Negro!" Filmmakers will be present at all four screenings for Q&A.

THE PROGRAMS:

FEBRUARY 1 SHANE W. EVANS delivers a multi-media presentation from his book and animated project 'CHOCOLATE ME', co-produced by TAYE DIGGS. This is a family oriented event for all-ages. Shane will be doing a book signing after. http://chocolatemetoo.com/

FEBRUARY 8 GARY JENKINS presents his rarely-seen documentary FREEDOM SEEKERS: STORIES FROM THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD. Jenkins recently premiered his documentary, Gangland Wire in a very successful run at Crown Center. http://lifedocumentaries.com/

FEBRUARY 15 STINSON MCLENDON's documentary on the Mutual Musician's Foundation, STILL JAMMIN', plus a grab bag of vintage jazz Soundies from the JOHN BAKER COLLECTION, courtesy of the American Jazz Museum. http://babyefilms.com/

FEBRUARY 22 A FIRST LOOK at DESTINATION: PLANET NEGRO! by filmmaker and actor KEVIN WILLMOTT. This will be a wonderful early opportunity to see Willmott's latest sharp-edged comedy! http://www.planetnegro.com/
