Park University International Center for Music to Present Van Cliburn Tribute Concert at Kansas City’s Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts

Parkville, Mo.—Jan. 13, 2014 — In celebration of the 10th anniversary of Park University’s International Center for Music, gold medalist of the 2001 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and founder of the ICM Stanislav Ioudenitch, his protégé and rising star — and 2009 winner of the London International Piano Competition — Behzod Abduraimov, along with the Park Piano Trio, will perform a special Van Cliburn Tribute Concert on Friday, April 4, at 7:30 p.m., in Helzberg Hall at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, in Kansas City, Mo. This will be the debut concert for the ICM at the Kauffman Center, though Abduraimov has performed in the facility twice in the past two years with the Kansas City Symphony.

This concert will be a touching homage to Cliburn, a treasured American pianist who passed away in late February 2013 and was a personal inspiration for Ioudenitch. Cliburn’s historic victory at the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1958 at the height of the Cold War transcended politics and tore down cultural barriers.

“Van was truly a ‘Citizen of the Planet,’ whose music transcended political and cultural boundaries,” said Ioudenitch. “We remember him as not only our spiritual brother, but also as a kind and generous mentor. I loved him, like so many who were privileged to know him.”

The program will include Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Suite No. 1 for Two Pianos,” Peter Tchaikovsky’s “Piano Trio in A Minor” and a premiere of a work written by ICM Director Ingrid Stölzel for Ioudenitch in memory of Cliburn, “In the Midst for Solo Piano.”

Tickets are available through the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts at, (816) 994-7222 or at the Kauffman Center’s Box Office, 1601 Broadway.
