National Institute for Construction Excellence hires executive director

The National Institute for Construction Excellence (NICE), a Kansas City-based 501(c)(3) construction advocacy group that strives to improve the image of construction-related fields for young people and strengthen economic development in the community, has hired Gregory A. Lever as Executive Director. A native Missourian, Greg has lived in Kansas City for the past 34 years and has always enjoyed being involved in professional and civic activities. He is an alumnus of Avila University, where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. After graduating in 1985, Greg continued to serve the university on its Alumni Board of Directors for six years, including two terms as President of the Board. Greg currently sits on Avila’s Board of Counselors and resides in south Kansas City. Greg developed his interest and involvement in Kansas City’s political scene while a student at Avila. During his senior year in college, he served as the City Council Office’s first contract employee in the capacity of Administrative Assistant to Councilman John Sharp. Greg later returned to City Hall to serve as then-Mayor Emanuel Cleaver’s Assistant for Legislative Affairs, a position in which Greg was the Mayor’s liaison to the City Council, as well as the legislatures in both Jefferson City and Washington. Greg fondly recalls his days at City Hall working with these two leaders who continue to make a positive contribution to our community through their public service. After his years at City Hall, Greg took the knowledge, experience and relationships he had gained and utilized those assets for the betterment of the not-for-profit sector in Kansas City. He served as the Executive Director of the Westport Merchants Association from 1999-2002, and then started his consulting company, LEVERage Consulting, Inc., through which he worked with several clients, most notably serving as the Executive Director of the Kansas City Regional Transit Alliance from 2003-2007. In 2009, Greg used his experience as a strong advocate for various issues and focused his energies as the first Business Development Manager for the engineering firm of Taliaferro & Browne, Inc. Greg proudly represented this well-established minority-owned business enterprise until October 2013. While at Taliaferro & Browne, Greg helped them maintain their strong presence in the Kansas City region while leading their expansion into the St. Louis market in March 2010. To complement his professional endeavors, Greg served as a Mayoral Appointee on the Citizens Commission on Municipal Revenue. He also currently serves on the Avila University Board of Counselors, is a Presidential Appointee to the Selective Service System Local Board, and is an NAACP Silver Lifetime Member. He is a past Member of the Saint Joseph Institute for the Deaf Advisory Board, the MS Corporate Achievers Advisory Council, Powell Gardens, and the Urban League of Greater Kansas City. He is also a recipient of the Lifetime Board Member Award from the Avila University Alumni Association Board of Directors. For more information, visit www.nice-kc.com or call Greg at (816) 474-0108.
