Providence Medical Center receives 5 stars for total knee replacement care and spinal fusion surgery

Providence Medical Center today announced that it has received 5 stars for the quality of its total knee replacement care and spinal fusion surgery from Healthgrades, the leading online resource that helps consumers search, compare and connect with physicians and hospitals. This achievement is part of new findings recently released in American Hospital Quality Outcomes 2014: Healthgrades Report to the Nation, which evaluates hospital performance at over 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 31 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.

The new report demonstrates how clinical performance differs dramatically between hospitals. Providence Medical Center is the only facility in the Region* to be Five Star Rated for Spine Fusion for eight years in a row. “We are very proud and pleased to inform the community of these recent recognitions by Healthgrades for our total knee replacement and spinal fusion surgery,” said Randy Nyp, Providence Medical Center CEO. “The award represents our staff’s commitment to providing quality care for our patients.”

Karen Orr, Chief Nursing Officer for Providence Medical Center, was instrumental in developing the Providence Joint Center in 2002. Orr explains, “The key to successful knee replacements at the Providence Joint Center is the conscious engagement of the patient and their family in the entire process from pre-surgery education to patient-directed pain management through discharge and physical therapy bringing the new joint to full strength. The staff at the Joint Center focuses on making each and every knee replacement a positive experience for our patient and their family.” She added patients and (family) coaches get the opportunity to meet the staff of the joint center, tour the unit as well as meet fellow patients that will be undergoing surgery at the same time and rehabilitating in a group setting. This is done to increase their comfort level with the anticipated experience. “As American policy-makers focus more intently on ways to lower healthcare costs and improve quality, patients are being asked to assume more responsibility for their healthcare decisions – from selection of their health plan to the associated network of physicians and hospitals,” said Evan Marks, EVP, Strategy and Informatics, Healthgrades. “Since all hospitals do not perform equally in all procedures, patients can have confidence that by selecting a physician associated with a hospital with 5-star performance, for a specific procedure or condition, they can potentially improve outcomes and reduce costs.”

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 40 million Medicare-patient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide, assessing hospital performance relative to each of 31 common conditions and procedures. Healthgrades awards hospitals quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5 star (statistically better than expected), 3 star (statistically as expected) and 1 star (statistically worse than expected) categories.
