Christmas in Excelsior Springs

Christmas is coming– and it’s coming quick! Make plans on Saturday, November 23 to make the trip to Excelsior Springs to start the season off the right way.

The Excelsior Springs Christmas Committee, an off-branch of the Chamber of Commerce, has been working hard all year planning and preparing for this year’s Annual Christmas Celebration. On Saturday, November 23 all the hard work will finally pay off.

The Lighted Christmas Parade, now in it’s sixth year, is now accepting registration forms for entries. As an extra incentive this year, participants have a chance to win a $100 cash prize. There will be four different parade categories – Auto, Business & Civic groups, Churches and Youth groups. Parade entry fee is $10. There is still time to join in the fun and enter the parade. Light up your car, tractor, or bike or create a fun, lighted float. Entry rules and registration information can be found on the Christmas Committee’s website, www.excelsiorspringschristmascommittee.com. The parade will take place on Saturday, November 23 at 6 p.m. downtown Excelsior Springs. The 2013 Grand Marshall will be Keith Winge, who is being honored for his outstanding leadership in bringing about increased tourism and economic development in Historic downtown Excelsior Springs. Along with traditional favorites like Santa Claus, Chiefs mascot KC Wolf will be an exciting addition to this year’s parade.

The Elf Factory will be open at the Montgomery Event Center, 425 S. Thompson, from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m., offering plenty of fun for kids of all ages. The Elf Factory provides several different crafts for the little ones to make to give as homemade Christmas gifts. Let the little ones shop for family and friends – items range from a quarter up to two dollars.

Down on 101 West Broadway (previously Ryan’s Pizzeria), Santa will be visiting from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., taking photos.

The Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting will be held after the parade at the Hall of Waters. The downtown businesses will be holding their Christmas Open House, staying open later than usual and offering sales and serving special treats.

The Christmas spirit simply marks the beginning of the holiday events in Excelsior Springs, with several other events planned. The Lane of Lights, now brighter than ever, will be open for an extended time frame. The Lane of Lights has become the largest drive-through light display in the Northland. Beginning November 23, the Lane will be open on weekends and holidays through December 6, when it will then be open nightly through New Year’s Eve. Donations are encouraged at the gate.

The Hall of Trees, a longstanding tradition of decorated trees held at the Hall of Waters, will be open during business hours, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

On Saturday, December 7th, the Holiday Homes Tour allows local resident’s to share their personal Christmas spirit with the rest of the town. This year’s homes belong to Ambrose and Sherry Buckman, Gary and Sue Hinze, Jinx Fisher, Keith and Judy Hurt and Earl Hurshman. The Hurshman residence will be a tour not of his home, but of his spectacular dollhouse workshop. The tour will last from 12:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Excelsior Springs Chamber of Commerce office, Remax Realty in Excelsior Springs, and the Visitor Center located at the Hall of Waters. Ticket price increases to $15 at the door.
