Mark Allen produces bodybag fashion show

Mark Allen is at it once again. The provocative artist, who infamously faked his own death last month, is producing his latest stunt—a fashion show for designer bodybags. The Mark Allen Spring/Summer 2014 show will take place November 2 nd at 7pm at Vulpes Bastille gallery, 1737 Locust KCMO. The fashion show/ art exhibit will feature the newest creations by the artist, including bodybags, screenprinted apparel, and jewelry made from human wisdom teeth. The designer bodybags are a unique creation by Mark Allen. Each bag is made-to- order, taking a dozen measurements from the fi tter along with choice of material, color, and fur lining. Each bag is then sewn by the artist himself. They can be displayed as works of art, or used to serve their pragmatic function -- to carry away a corpse. The bodybags will be displayed at the end of the fashion show with the artist inside, with models pushing him on a gurney. Along with the bodybags will be his silkscreened creations made from garments found at thrift stores. The artist creates a series of designs featuring his tombstone logo, symbolic crosses, and feline images with “PU$$Y” written beneath. These are not only clothes, but also works of art commenting on society and the allure of language and symbols. 8 models will be displaying the designs, enduring a 22 minute show. Mark Allen will also be doing a series of performances around Kansas City in promotion of his show. These performances, or “non-performance art” as the he refers to them, occur in public places. The artist lies down in his custom fi t bodybag, zips himself inside, and acts dead. Each performance varies in length and usually ends when security removes him from the premises. He has performed in London, Venice, Florence, New York, Los Angeles, and was even arrested in Art Basel Miami Beach, a multi-billion dollar contemporary art fair. These performances take place in museums, galleries, streets, and landmarks. He will be performing at the Nelson Atkins, Kemper Museum, and the Country Club Plaza in the upcoming weeks prior to the show. This event aims to be a seminal work in Mark Allen's oeuvre. It is a fashion show but also a performance art piece, mimicking New York fashion week and the industry surrounding celebrity and culture. It will be an event that should not be missed.
