It’s not your Grandfather’s auction house . . .
Andrew Turner Auctions provides urban KC auction experience
Kansas City, Mo. (October 21, 2013) - If you’re expecting to see the auctioneer wearing a cowboy hat, big belt buckle, and heavily starched shirt tightly tucked into blue jeans - you’re in the wrong place.
“When most people think about an auction that’s what comes to mind,” said auctioneer Andrew Turner. “To each his own, it’s just not what we’re about.” Turner, the owner and auctioneer of Andrew Turner Auctions, may be seen on auction night wearing high-tops, denim, and nine times out of ten, a well-worn black t-shirt sporting the company’s logo.
The Thursday night auction crowd is a bit different, too. Art school kids, hipsters, and musicians mingle with dyed-in-the-wool auction goers, and ladies on the look for First Friday merchandise for their West Bottom boutiques. If you don’t need anything new, or are not in the retail-resale racket, it’s simply something new to do in Kansas City on a Thursday night.
“We’ll have a group of guys bidding up boxes of vinyl records one minute, and another crowd going crazy over a WWII helmet and uniform the next,” said Turner. “Then some ladies fighting tooth and nail for primitive furniture or artwork, and ‘speculators’ trying to buy all of the gold and silver offered that night - it’s fun to watch if nothing else.”
Each week the company offers a wide array of material, mainly procured from estates across the Kansas City metro area. Those downsizing, liquidating a collection, or serving as the executor of an estate arrange for material to be sold on a consignment basis.
“There is a lot of stuff out there,” said Turner. “We’ve helped hundreds liquidate through our Kansas City consignment auction.”
Auctions are held almost every Thursday evening at the company’s auction facility: 1801 Guinotte, Kansas City, Mo. 64120 - just east of City Market in the East Bottoms. Auction begins at 6:00 pm with preview available after 5:00 pm, and are usually finished by 10:30 pm. Preview photos and video are posted each week on the website, www.atakc.com.
