Jazz Is Alive in Kansas City, Kansas!

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Library presents Bop in the Dotte, a celebration of local heritage and culture. Bop in the Dotte will kick off Sunday, November 10 at West Wyandotte Library with an opening reception for The Fine Art of Jazz, a photographic exhibition by Dan White. The Fine Art of Jazz is an exhibition showcasing the names and faces synonymous with the Kansas City tradition of American jazz. It is a program of ExhibitsUSA, a national division of Mid-America Arts Alliance, with The National Endowment for the Arts.

Fanny Alaadeen will be at Main Library on Sunday, November 17. She will be signing copies of her book The Heartbeat Next To My Heartbeat, the story of her 24 year romance with jazz saxophonist Ahmad Alaadeen. There will also be a performance by bassist Seth Lee and The Young 21ers.

Join Chuck Haddix for a discussion of his new book, Bird: The Life and Music of Charlie Parker, on Wednesday, November 20 at Main Library. He will be answering questions about his book and research into the life of Charlie Parker. Copies will be available for purchase and signing.

Experience Latin Jazz with Pablo Sanhueza on Thursday, November 21 at South Branch Library. Pablo Sanhueza will be giving a jazz workshop to anyone interested in learning more about Latin jazz. Following the workshop, he and his band, Makuza, will be performing a concert. Enjoy the show and learn more about this jazz tradition.

Come enjoy some great jazz music and food for everyone at Wyandotte High School on Wednesday, December 18. The Kansas City Jazz Orchestra will be performing and there will be a barbecue dinner before the concert. Visit your local KCKPL branch or go online to reserve tickets starting November 11.

These five great events are only a small part of what you’ll find at Bop in the Dotte. The two month celebration will include films, book clubs, discussion panels, live music, world class art, great food, and more. Don’t miss out!
