Spay & Neuter Kansas City Announces Operation Trap, Neuter, Return

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Spay & Neuter Kansas City Announces Operation Trap, Neuter, Return $20,000 grant from the PetCo Foundation will allow Spay and Neuter Kansas City to trap, neuter and return 1,000 feral cats in two zip codes in a 6 month period.

Kansas City, Missouri - October 15, 2013 – There are an estimated 85,685 feral cats living in Kansas City, MO and an estimated 7,847 feral cats in the 64130 and 64127 zip codes alone. These staggering numbers are the reason why the PetCo Foundation awarded Spay and Neuter Kansas City (SNKC) $20,000 in funding to target these two zip codes to trap, neuter and return 1,000 feral cats over the next 6 months.

The expected outcomes are a reduction in the number of Animal Control nuisance calls from these two zip codes and to reduce the feral cat population for the long-term. Since the colony’s members will no longer be able to procreate, the colony size will diminish over time and be less of a public health and safety risk, as well as benefit the colony’s health and well - being.

The community can help SNKC by volunteering to help collect feral cats in humane traps in these two zip codes. Volunteers simply need to obtain a humane trap from SNKC and bring the cats in. SNKC will perform the surgery, give the cat a rabies vaccination and the cat will be “ear tipped” so they can be identified as a neutered cat. And because of the PetCo Foundation grant, all of this will be at no cost to the volunteer.

“We can’t do this alone, but with the community’s help, we can help neutralize and stabilize the feral cat population in Kansas City through the Trap, Neuter, Return program. It’s the most effective and humane method possible to help the cats and the neighborhoods.” Marlan Roberts, Pet Outreach Manager for SNKC, said.

Spay & Neuter Kansas City is a 501C3 nonprofit organization formed to reduce the number of unwanted and stray animals entering community shelters through our spay and neuter program, wellness clinic and pet outreach programs and help other homeless pets improve their chance at a new and loving home.
