Fall Curb Appeal - Three Easy Tips to Follow
Autumn is knocking on our door - crisp air and trees ablaze in red yellow & orange. Westlake shares three easy tips to inject curb appeal into a fall landscape.
1) Seasonal color for quick impact
Mums are an easy and inexpensive way to quickly inject vibrant autumn color into your landscape. To make the best impact, plant mums in groupings of three, five or seven plants—either in one color, or multiple complimentary colors. Mound dirt to add height to your display, give them a drink of water, and mulch with fresh wood bark to give a neat, professional appearance.
For a little variety, try Tri-Color mums. Each pot contains multiple colors to provide an eye-catching display and a unique flavor to any autumn landscape makeover.
An exciting new plant variety this autumn is the Cool Wave™ Pansy. This unique, “spreading” pansy has twice the color and flower production of regular pansies. For even more impact, plant these robust flowers in masses in borders along a front walk.
2) Think beyond flowers
Adding ornamental grasses to your autumn landscape evokes images of harvest, and the green and purple spiked leaves provide contrast with the bright colors of the mums and pansies. Cool-weather plants like ornamental kale thrive when the temperatures drop and will look great through Thanksgiving. Kale has large, leafy rosettes of brilliant pinks and purples, offset by green or ivory—but the color really shows through with frost and cold temperatures.
3) Don’t forget the pumpkins and gourds
Even if you don’t plan to carve a jack-o-lantern this Halloween, pumpkins and gourds add no-fuss color and visual interest to any landscape, patio or container—especially when paired with dried millet, straw bales and cornstalks. This autumn, consider hollowing out a pumpkin and using it as a mum planter. Fill unused, vintage containers or lanterns with miniature pumpkins and arrange these objects with potted mums.
