Norma Cantú to discuss new book at Central Library

Writer Norma Cantú, internationally known scholar of Latino and Chicano literature and culture, discusses her new book Canicula: Snapshots of a Girlhood en la Frontera on Thursday, September 5, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.
Canicula is a chronicle of life on the U.S.-Mexico border, specifically in Laredo, Texas. Cantú will also read from her poetry book manuscript Meditacion Fronteriza or Borderlands Meditation and from her current novel-in-progress, tentatively titled Champú or Hair Matters.
Formerly a professor of English at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Cantú recently joined the UMKC Department of English and the Latina/Latino Studies Program. Her areas of interest and research include Chicano literature, border studies, cultural studies, feminist studies, and folklore.
In 2012 she was inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters and received the prestigious Nebrija Creative Writing Award from the Instituto Franklin at the Universidad de Henares in Spain.
Among her other books are Moctezuma's Table, Inside the Latin Experience, Chicana Traditions, and Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza.
This event is co-sponsored by the Latino Writers Collective and the Kansas City Museum. Admission is free. A 6 p.m. reception precedes the event. Free parking is available at the Library District Parking Garage at 10th & Baltimore.
