Two Awarded Employee-Funded Blue Valley Rec Scholarships
Employees of Blue Valley Recreation voluntarily contribute money each paycheck and commissioners donate to a scholarship fund dedicated to helping staff and volunteers continue their education. In the fifth year of funding, Samantha Cacy and Amy Wells were both awarded $500 scholarships.
Cacy, a native of Stilwell, has been employed at Blue Valley Rec since 2008 as a lifeguard supervisor and customer service representative. She is in her final year at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) and will earn a Bachelor’s degree in sign language interpretation. Cacy’s dedication to her job earned her recognition for Superior Service in 2011 and 2012. She also serves as the backstage coordinator for the American Youth Ballet and is an American Sign Language Interpreter for AWANA .
Wells has been a swim instructor for Blue Valley Rec since 2010 and has also volunteered at Family Fall Festival and Egg Dive. A 2013 graduate of Blue Valley Northwest, she is attending Johnson County Community College (JCCC) to study liberal arts. At Blue Valley Northwest, Wells held leadership roles in National Honors Society, Spanish Honors Society, and Latin Honors Society and was a member of the varsity swim and dive team, REbeL, and band. Additionally, she served as an editor of the literary and art magazine and volunteered at Harvester’s.
The post-secondary scholarship started in 2009 when executive director Steve Baysinger envisioned a way to honor dedicated staff and volunteers. The scholarships are funded entirely through voluntary contributions from employee payroll deductions and donations from commissioners.
Applicants must submit a three-page application and must have been employed at Blue Valley Rec for a minimum of 80 hours or volunteered for at least 20 hours within the fiscal year (July-June). Blue Valley Rec has awarded a total of $5,000 in scholarships during the five-year history.
