Head Start of Shawnee Mission Back-To-School Night Hosted by Wonderscope Children’s Museum of Kansas City

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.— On Thursday, August 29, Wonderscope Children’s Museum of Kansas City will partner with Head Start of Shawnee Mission as they host a complimentary back-to-school night for families enrolled at Head Start of Shawnee Mission. The event, through sponsorship support from the Francis Family Foundation, will be held at the museum located at 5700 King, Shawnee, KS, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The event is part of the launch for the museum’s “PLAY it forward” program – an opportunity for community friends to give the gift of play by purchasing a family membership for families who could not otherwise afford access to the museum. Activities include children’s interactive learning opportunities through play that integrate the arts, sciences, and literature.

“We are excited to partner with Wonderscope in bringing this opportunity to our children and families,” said Terrie VanZandt-Travis, executive director of Head Start of Shawnee Mission. “The chance to collaborate with Wonderscope in providing early childhood learning experiences is a winning partnership for both of our programs. Inviting our community to become involved in the museum’s ‘PLAY it forward’ program provides even stronger support in providing opportunities to area low-income children.”

Wonderscope has organized this special evening in hopes of challenging the local community to invest in these young children and the museum by sponsoring ‘PLAY it forward’ memberships for each family served by Head Start of Shawnee Mission.

“Wonderscope is committed to all children experiencing the joy of learning through play, regardless of their economic means,” said Wonderscope board member Jill deVries Jolicoeur. “An investment in Wonderscope is an investment in the future citizens and workforce of our community.”

Head Start of Shawnee Mission (located at 8155 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, KS) provides quality early childhood learning experiences and comprehensive child and family services to more than 200 poverty-level children, ages birth to five, and their families, empowering low-income families to maximize their success.
