KPERS’ Board of Trustees Elects Past Speaker of the House Doug Mays as New Board Chairperson

KPERS’ Board of Trustees voted Doug Mays, of Topeka, as chairperson for the coming fiscal year.

Mays is currently president of Doug Mays and Associates, LLC, a governmental affairs firm. He was in the Kansas Legislature from 1993 to 2007 and was Kansas Speaker of the House during four of those years. He was elected to the Legislature after spending several years in other areas of Kansas politics, including 1987 to 1991 as the Kansas Securities Commissioner. He attended both Pittsburg State University and Washburn University, earning a bachelor’s degree in Communications.

Mays appointed fellow trustee Terry Matlack, of Shawnee, as the vice-chairperson. Matlack is managing director for Tortoise Capital Advisors, LLC,. Both have been on the Board since 2011.

KPERS’ Board has nine trustees. Four are appointed by the Governor, two are appointed by legislative leaders, two are elected by Retirement System members, and one is the elected State Treasurer. All serve four-year terms.

The Retirement System serves members and their beneficiaries as fiduciaries, holding assets in trust for them, growing those assets through investments, and delivering promised benefits when the time comes.

KPERS provides retirement, disability and death benefits for Kansas’s state and local public employees. The Retirement System has 286,000 members and manages over $14 billion in assets. The System also oversees Tandem, the state’s voluntary 457(b) deferred compensation savings plan.
