SASS-MOKAN to hold 10th Annual Remembrance Walk
Kansas City, Missouri (August 20, 2013) – Suicide Awareness Survivor Support Missouri-Kansas (SASS-MoKan) will hold its 10th Annual Remembrance Walk on Sunday, Sept. 8, at Loose Park, 51st and Wornall, Kansas City, Missouri. This community walk is for anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one to a traumatic death such as suicide, homicide, fire or accident.
SASS-MoKan, a 501©(3) not-for-profit organization, was started nine years ago after Bonnie and Mickey Swade lost their 31-year-old son Brett to suicide. This support group helps to combat the stigma and shame associated with suicide and to foster a greater understanding and sensitivity when dealing with the traumatic grief experienced by suicide survivors. Community support meetings are held during the month throughout the Metropolitan Kansas City area, St. Joseph and Lawrence. The Annual Remembrance Walk is the major part of SASS-MoKan’s fundraising to help with suicide awareness, education, prevention and survivor support. SASS-MoKan supports many organizations that raise money to research the brain and behavior. As a grass roots organization, it also focuses on assisting people in the local community.
Veterans are ending their lives by more than previously thought, with 22 deaths a day – or one every 65 minutes, on average. One in six teen-agers has considered suicide and one in 12 has attempted to take their lives. New data shows that the suicide rate among middle-aged Americans has risen sharply. Suicide knows no boundaries. It can be a local Kansas City Chiefs linebacker or the beloved teen-age son of Lake Forest, California’s Saddleback Church Pastor Rick Warren. Suicide affects loved-ones, friends, co-workers and the whole community. SASS-MoKan’s education program is invaluable in helping to identify the signs of possible suicide.
The Remembrance Walk begins with registration at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8. The walk will start in Loose Park at 9:00 a.m. followed by a dove release. Registration fee for the walk is $25. Participants can register online at http://www.sass-mokan.com/Sass-walk/.
