Local actor's popular film to have its TV debut August 24/25 2013

Racism tackled head-on in SONY Pictures powerful drama “The Grace Card”

LOS ANGELES, CA, UNITED STATES, August 20, 2013 -- They say all you need for a movie to be successful is two great scenes. “The Grace Card” (www.thegracecardmovie.com) has that and several more. Made on a budget of less than ½ a million dollars in 2010, the inspiring Christian drama was quickly bought up by Sony Pictures where it premiered in theaters nation-wide in February 2011. It has since then become a big favorite of faith based audiences across the nation and the world, “The Memphis Commercial appeal” and many other fans calling it “The most powerful, effective movie of its type ever made.” Much of that credit goes to lead actor Michael Joiner, a twenty year stand-up comedian who in 2002 moved his family to Hollywood, CA. from Kansas City, MO. to more seriously study film acting. In 2008 he moved his family back home to Kansas City,MO. That's when the producers of "The Grace Card" called. Joiner was offered the lead role after a nation-wide search by producer/director David. G. Evans proved fruitless. Then he saw Joiner’s acting reel. “I knew right then and there this was the actor I wanted for the lead.” says Evans. Writer/producer Howie Klausner (Space Cowboys, The identical) was not so easily convinced. “All I heard was ‘stand-up comedian’ and I just rolled my eyes” says Klausner. However, Klausner learned early during the making of “The Grace Card” that Joiner “could go dark”, meaning he could handle serious dramatic roles. “He just lit it up, “ said Klausner, “He blew everybody away the first day…He’s amazing (in the film).” So amazing that Klausner cast him in his most recent film, “The Identical”, which stars Ray Liotta, Seth Green, and Ashley Judd, to name a few. Joiner’s performance in “The Grace Card” proved to be a “sleeper” for the film, giving the movie quite a jolt at the box office, and since going to DVD. He may also be the only actor in a faith based film to ever receive glowing reviews in the likes of “The Hollywood Reporter” and “Variety”, the movie industry’s top ranking publications. “The Grace Card” is also credited with making Joiner one of the faith based film industry’s most “in demand” actors. “I’ve been cast in no less than a dozen starring or co-starring roles since “The Grace Card”, most of them coming out in 2013/14”, says Joiner. Joiner has also recently started his own production company, Esther Pictures (www.estherpictures.com), which has several projects in the works. “My goal is edgier, more honest stories that appeal to secular audiences as well as Christian”, says Joiner. “No ‘preaching to the choir’, or hitting people over the head with some overt sermon. Audiences go to theaters to be entertained. If they want to get preached to, they’ll go to church.” “Our goal is to make films that are as comparable in production quality to what Hollywood puts out,” He says. “God’s name may not always be mentioned. However, just like in the book of Esther, his presence will be evident.” “After all, “ Joiner continues, “Every movie that has ever been made, one way or the other, promotes the philosophy of the filmmakers…how much more should movies made by Christians?” “The Grace Card is scheduled for five televised showings the weekend of August 24 and 25 on UP TV.
