He Rode with Shelby: John Campbell Handly Gravesite Dedication

Warrensburg, MO----------- The descendants of Lafayette County pioneer John Campbell Handly invite the public to the Gravesite Dedication recognizing his Civil War military service. Under the command of General Joseph O. Shelby, Handly fought in the Missouri 5th Cavalry of the Confederate States Army. After being wounded in the Battle of Springfield, Handly was discharged in May 1863.

The John Campbell Handly Gravesite Dedication will take place September 8, 2013 in the Zion Hill Cemetery on Route YY in southern Lafayette County. Darrell L. Maples, Commander, MO Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans will preside over the ceremony, which will include an address by LTC James A. Shelby (Ret.) on the leadership of Gen. Joseph O. Shelby in many Missouri battles and skirmishes during the Civil War. The ceremony will be accompanied by Civil War re-enactors including Elliott’s Scouts and Missouri 2nd Artillery - CSA. Descendants of Mr. Handly will participate as well, including the 4th great-grandchildren who will unveil the updated grave marker.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony at 3:00pm on September 8, 2013 in the Zion Hill Cemetery on Route YY in southern Lafayette County. From the I-70/MO 13 (Higginsville) intersection, proceed southbound on MO 13 approximately 5 miles to the state route YY intersection. Turn left; proceed eastbound on YY approximately 4 miles to the Zion Hill Church and Cemetery. Parking will be limited; carpooling and lawn chairs are encouraged. Period dress is acceptable. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will take place in the Zion Hill Church on the same site.
