Art, nature subjects of separate home school programs beginning Sept. 5

Art and nature are the subjects of two separate home school programs offered for youth ages six to 12 beginning in early September.

The classes are Creativity Studio and Nature Explorers sand both are designed to supplement and support home school efforts.

Creativity Studio will give students a chance to take part in a variety of art activities in a studio setting. Some sessions will include stations for free movement among activities, while others will feature guest instructors leading specific lessons. This class will take place at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee. The cost for six 60-minute sessions is $45 per person for Johnson County residents or $50 per person for nonresidents. To find Creativity Studio in the JCPRD’s Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under youth and then under fine & performing arts. In the printed catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keywords “homeschool art.”

Nature Explorers is an intergenerational program which will let participants explore nature and animals around the Ernie Miller Nature Center. Park naturalists will present a series of five educational programs on five Thursdays during September and early October with a different theme for each session. If the weather permits, these sessions will be held outdoors and participants should dress for outdoor exploration. Parents will also receive tips on how to weave outdoor exploration into their lessons. The first session is called "Discover the Prairie" and will take place on Sept. 5. Other sessions and their themes are: "Aquatic Adventures" on Sept. 12, "Westward Ho!" on Sept. 19, "Hike in the Forest" on Sept. 26, and "Survival Skills" on Oct. 3. All classes begin at 3:30 p.m. on a Thursday, last about an hour, and will take place at the Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe. A parent must register with each child. The cost on these one-hour programs is $2.75 per person for Johnson County residents and $3.75 per person for nonresidents. Preregistration is required. For more information, call (913) 764-7759. To find Nature Explorers in the JCPRD’s Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under youth and then under nature & outdoors. In the printed catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keywords “home school.”
