New track program for girls in grades 3-8 begins Sept. 9 & 10

Educating and preparing girls in grades three through eight for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living is the goal of a new track program being offered by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District.

For girls in grades three through five, the program is called Girls on the Run, while for girls in grades six through eight, it is called Girls on Track. Using a well-research curriculum, the program teaches life lessons through fun interactive games combined with training for a non-competitive end of season 5K event on Nov. 16 at Arrowhead Stadium.

To find this program in the JCPRD Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under youth, then under sports. In the catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keyword “track.”

For the younger participants, Girls on the Run is offered at 4:15 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday beginning Sept. 9 at two locations. One class takes place at the Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, while the other takes place at the Mill Creek Activity Center, 6915 Vista Dr., Shawnee. For older girls, Girls on Track is offered at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday beginning Sept. 10 at the New Century Fieldhouse. For either age group, the cost for 20 90-minute sessions is $145 for Johnson County residents or $160 for nonresidents. The registration deadline is Sept. 3. After registering, participants will receive forms to fill out via email so they can return them at the first class.

The JCPRD's Activities catalog, with information and a registration form, is available for pickup at all Johnson County Library branches. For more information or to register, call (913) 831-3359. To register online and for updated program listings, visit the District's website at www.jcprd.com.
