Local culinary favorite to compete at Great Midwest Balloon Fest
KANSAS CITY, MO – August 1, 2013 Kansas City, get ready to vote for you’re your favorite local Culinary King…Foodie Favorite…Gourmet Genius! Four of Kansas City’s most gifted and entertaining culinary masters will be competing for the bragging rights of BEST IN SHOW at the 4th Annual U.S. Bank Great Midwest Balloon Festival, from 1-5 pm on Saturday, August 10, grounds of the Great Mall of the Great Plains in Olathe, KS.
Four area culinary artisans will each have 45 minutes to educate and entertain their audiences while preparing a signature recipe from start to finish. Audience members will have the unique opportunity to interact and ask questions before they cast their vote for BEST IN SHOW. “This will truly be a ‘people’s choice’ award,” Valerie Hervert, Festival Coordinator, said. “Each member of the audience will receive one token as they take their seat. They will use that token to cast their vote for the presentation the most entertaining and educational. The presenter who collects the most tokens will earn the title, BEST IN SHOW.”

1:00 pm – Gay Lynn & Madeline Corrado, Sweet G’s Cupcakes Gay Lynn and her 15 year-old daughter, Madeline, make some truly amazing cupcakes from their kitchen in the City Market and deliver them all around the Metro. What is even more amazing is that Gay Lynn is a two-time cancer survivor – having battled both thyroid and ovarian cancer. She bakes with a cause – to educate the public about early detection and raise funds for organizations such as the American Cancer Society.
2:00 pm – Jasper Mirabile, Jasper's Restaurant & Marco Polo's Italian Market Not only is Jasper one of Kansas City’s premier chefs but he has maintained a local dining tradition that began with his father and grandfather in 1956. For 57 years the Mirabile family has been delighting Kansas Citians with their traditional Italian recipes. Since Jasper joined the family business at the age of 22, his energetic personality has made him one of the most recognized and loved chefs in the area. In addition to his restaurant duties, he writes the popular monthly Locavore column in 435 Magazine, is a weekly contributor to the KC Star - Chow Town food blog and hosts LIVE from Jasper’s Kitchen every Saturday from 11 am to Noon on Talk Radio KCMO with co-host, award-winning food, travel & design writer, Kimberly Stern.
3:00 pm - Shannon "Firebug" Kimball, Barbeque Expert and Local Grilling Enthusiast Shannon is an award-winning private chef, culinary instructor and founding member of the Kansas City Food Artisans. A self-taught chef, and raised on a cattle ranch, his cooking style and unique sauces have won the attention of the Midwest culinary circle. Shannon’s handcrafted sauces are produced in small batches from locally sourced all natural ingredients have earned him several taste awards including “People’s Choice” – American Royal BBQ Sauce contest 2010 and First Place - Specialty Hot-Great American BBQ Sauce contest 2010.
4:00 pm - Lisa Farmer, Director, Farm to School Academy at KC Healthy Kids Lisa has been a champion of nutrition for over 20 years. She's recognized by many Kansas Citians for "Cooking with Lisa," a weekly cooking segment that has run on Fox 4 News for 13 years. Lisa's is committed to food education because she believes that "healthy habits are formed at an early age." She has worked with the YMCA, Head Start, Greater KC Farmer's Markets, KSU and MU Extensions, the Culinary Center of Kansas City, and more, serving in key planning, advocacy and educational roles surrounding health and nutrition education. Lisa is a member of the Society for Nutrition Education, the School Nutrition Association, Les Dames D'Escoffier International, the Greater Kansas City Food Policy Coalition, and the Kansas Nutrition Council. Lisa makes cooking local and cooking healthy both fun and easy.

Advance tickets to the Great Midwest Balloon Festival, $10 for adults and $5 for children (ages 6-12), are currently available at area HyVee locations, on line at www.midwestballoonfest.org and from 21 area charities that may be found atwww.midwestballoonfest.org/CharityChallenge.aspx. Children 5 and under are free.
Drawing nearly 50,000 fans over three days, the 4th Annual US Bank Great Midwest Balloon Fest will feature 50 balloons, including fabulous special shape and corporate balloons from across the country; balloon glows, rides and competitions; a Charity Challenge Balloon Race; carnival rides; fabulous food trucks and vendors; doughnut and pie eating contests; Science City Experiment Tent; special nightly concerts featuring The Elders (Aug. 9th) and the Scott Peery Band (Aug. 10th) and much, much more.
