Healthy Choices in Action at Rosedale Carnival

Local parents and Rosedale Healthy Kids volunteers organize an alternative healthy carnival to benefit Rainbow Mennonite CDF Freedom School®.

Kansas City, Kansas: Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013 – The parent committees of Rainbow Mennonite CDF Freedom School® and Rosedale Development Association’s Healthy Kids will sponsor the fifth annual “Healthy Kids Carnival” as a benefit for Rainbow Mennonite Freedom School on Saturday, August 3rd from 10 am – 2 pm at Whitmore Park.

Rainbow Mennonite Freedom School is one of six Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School® sites in the Kansas City metropolitan area, and serves area K-8th grade youth in a six-week summer enrichment program that focuses on literacy, leadership development and health/nutrition.

Instead of fried foods and candy, the Healthy Kids Carnival will feature healthy foods such as tostadas, corn on the cob, and fruit popsicles. Activities and games at the carnival emphasize activity, and include a bounce house, face painting, musical chairs and a basketball contest. Sports equipment and small toys will be offered as carnival prizes. Raffle items include tickets to the Royals, Starlight Theatre, Paradise Park and much more.

Rosedale Development Association’s Healthy Kids is a community advocacy effort to reduce childhood obesity through environmental and social changes. It was formed in 2009 as a partnership between Rosedale Development Association, the Rosedale Ministerial Alliance, KC Healthy Kids, and the University of Kansas Medical Center. It is funded in part through grants from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City.

Whitmore Park is located in the 1400 block of SW Blvd. in Kansas City, Kansas. In case of inclement weather, the food will be moved to Rainbow Mennonite Church, 1444 SW Blvd., Kansas City, Kansas.
