Missouri Gas Energy Announces the Opening of Joplin's First Reproducible Green Home as Part of the “Building Joplin” Project
Missouri Gas Energy (MGE), a natural gas distribution company based in Kansas City, and its partners in the “Building Joplin” project which was launched as a community effort to rebuild the city after the devastating tornado in 2011, will unveil Joplin’s first reproducible green home at a block party and open house on Saturday, July 27, 2013 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2215 W. 27th Street.
The home is owned by Frank Schaffer, president of F.E. Schaffer Construction and a partner in the Building Joplin project. Schaffer’s mother lived in the home when it was wiped out by the tornado. He rebuilt using new technology that meets today’s highest energy-efficient standards. The home incorporates a complete Thermal Enclosure System with comprehensive air sealing, quality-installed insulation, and high-performance windows to deliver improved comfort and lower utility bills. The house also has a high-efficiency heating, ventilating and cooling system, energy-efficient lighting and appliances, and a water management system to protect roofs, walls and foundations from water damage.
More than 5,000 homes in the Joplin metropolitan area were destroyed by the 2011 tornado, which has resulted in a construction boom. According to Robert Painter, MGE’s manager of Energy Efficient Programs, the need to rebuild so many homes presented the company with the opportunity to work with homeowners and those involved in the local construction industry to help them plan and build homes to reduce the amount of energy used on a day-to-day basis.
“Missouri Gas Energy made a commitment to encourage local builders, sub-contractors, and energy raters rebuilding or remodeling homes in this community to meet the higher efficiency qualification requirements needed to become certified as an ENERGY STAR® 3.0 partner,” said Painter. “We hope that the energy efficient home we are unveiling today will help foster public awareness on the significant energy savings and environmental benefits that can be achieved by building an energy efficient home. Our hope is that going forward Joplin will be used as a model for other communities looking to reduce their energy consumption.”
ENERGY STAR is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) voluntary program that helps businesses and individuals save money and protect our climate through superior energy efficiency.
The open house sponsored by MGE will allow the public to tour the home and learn about affordable products and that save money and energy along with the better building practices certified by Energy Star 3.0®. Additionally, MGE will provide tips on simple things homeowners can do to immediately start saving energy. Local partners who are helping to build a sustainable community also will be on hand including:
· Rheem · Kohler · GE · C&L Supply · Metro Appliances · B&G Drafting, Inc. · GreenTown Joplin · Fiberlite Technologies, Inc. · Accurate Rater Network · Ozark Nursery · Crane Home Energy · LP Tech Shield
