KC heart recipient to compete at World Transplant Games in South Africa

WESTWOOD, Kan. – July 19, 2013 – Barb Sheble, heart recipient from Kansas City, Kan., will represent Team MO-KAN and Team USA as she competes in the 2013 World Transplant Games in Durban, South Africa July 28-August4.

The World Transplant Games are the Olympics for athletes who are organ transplant survivors. Sheble will compete in discus, shot put, javelin and ball throw.

Sheble, 41, was diagnosed with arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia 18 years ago. Her heart was the size of a football once doctors took it out. She received a lifesaving heart transplant in August 2009.

“I’m eternally grateful for my donor. I don’t know who they were, but I owe them everything,” she said. “I hope by competing I inspire transplant survivors, people still awaiting a transplant and potential donors.”

More than just an athletic event, the World Transplant Games highlight the critical importance of organ and tissue donation, while celebrating the lives of organ donors and recipients. To join the donor registry, please visit mwtn.org.
