KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In 2012, the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation’s donors granted more than $220 million to the nonprofit community. The Community Foundation also received more than $550 million in new contributions last year, the most in its history, bringing the Foundation’s total assets to more than $1.8 billion today.
According to the recently released 2012 Columbus Survey of Community Foundations published by CF Insights, the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation ranked sixth in total assets, second in total gifts and second in total grants out of more than 700 community foundations nationwide. This puts the Community Foundation in the top one percent. Only Silicon Valley Community Foundation had higher gift and grant totals in 2012. The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation also topped CF Insights’ list of community foundations with the most transaction volume, processing 42,526 gifts and grants in 2012. Communities Foundation of Texas, Inc. was second on the list with 24,343 transactions.
“We attribute our success to our generous donors, who prove year after year that Kansas City is a center for charitable giving,” said Deborah Wilkerson, President & CEO of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. “Our founders believed that philanthropy should be the responsibility of many, not just a select few. What makes us unique is our ability to give donors of all levels the tools they need to be organized and effective givers.”
In the 35 years since a small group of community leaders passed a hat, collecting $210.25 to establish the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation in 1978, Community Foundation donors have given more than $2.3 billion in grants to nonprofit organizations.
“The fact that the Community Foundation has continued to receive such high rankings is a testament to the team’s high level of service,” said Bill Berkley, Chair of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation Board of Directors. “The staff provides a great philanthropic experience for donors, regardless of fund size.”
As the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation celebrates its 35th anniversary and looks ahead at its next 35 years, its focus will be on maintaining an environment that makes charitable giving easy and meaningful for people of all giving levels, thus increasing philanthropy in Greater Kansas City and improving the quality of life in the region.
The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation has ranked among the top ten largest community foundations in America since 1999, delivering innovative products and services that make charitable giving easy and meaningful for philanthropists of all income levels. The Community Foundation knows that every gift matters – no matter how big or small – and encourages donors to support the causes they care about. For more information, visit www.gkccf.org.
