JCPRD beaches and marinas to end their summer seasons Aug. 4
Time is quickly winding down to take advantage of the summer season for two beaches and two marinas operated by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District. The facilities include: The Shawnee Mission Park Beach and Shawnee Mission Park Marina, both located in Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa; and Kill Creek Park Beach and Marina, 11670 Homestead Lane, Olathe.
All four facilities will close for their regular summer seasons on Aug, 4. Until then, Shawnee Mission Park Beach will be open from noon to 4 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and from noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. Kill Creek Park Beach will be open only on weekends with Friday, Saturday, and Sunday hours of noon to 6 p.m., also through Aug. 4. Daily rates at either facility for children 12 and under adults over 50 are $3 for Johnson County residents and $3.50 for nonresidents. Admission for adults is $5 for Johnson County residents and $5.50 for nonresidents. Both beaches accept cash only.
Even though the beaches are closing, special weekly opportunities for triathletes to practice open water swimming will continued through Sept. 2 at Kill Creek Park Beach. On every Monday through that date, the beach will be available for open water swimming from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The cost is $4 per person for Johnson County residents or $4.50 per person for nonresidents. Until Aug. 1, these opportunities are also offered at Shawnee Mission Park from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday at the same costs listed for Kill Creek Park.
Also ending their summer operating hours on Aug. 4 are the marinas at both parks. Until then, Shawnee Mission Park Marina will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily and the Kill Creek Park Marina will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Remember, the last boat rental each day will be allowed 30 minutes before close. Both marinas offer boat rentals, including canoes, kayaks, pedal boats, and fishing boats (SMP only). Rental rates are listed in the March- July Activities catalog, and on the District's website at www.jcprd.com. Fishing permits are also available at the marinas. Patrons should be aware that while the Shawnee Mission Park Marina now accepts credit cards, the Kill Creek Park Marina does not and neither facility accepts checks. Following the close of the summer season, the Shawnee Mission Park Marina will continue to be open on weekends on Aug. 10 and 11, Aug. 17 and 18, Aug. 24 and 25, and Aug. 31 through Sept. 2.
