88th annual American Royal Parade salutes U.S. military and Midwest agrarian values

88th Annual American Royal Parade Gives Star-Spangled Salute to U.S. Military and Midwest Agrarian Values

July 15, 2013, Kansas City, Mo. – On September 28, 2013, the American Royal Association will host the 88th annual American Royal Parade, featuring a Star-Spangled Salute to the U.S. Military and Midwest agrarian values.

Starting at 9:45 a.m., Grand Marshals Kansas Governor Sam Brownback and Mary Jean Eisenhower, granddaughter of President Dwight Eisenhower, will lead the parade from the intersection of Pershing and Grand north through downtown Kansas City, Mo. and end at Truman Road.

The event is expected to be the region’s largest, modern-day parade dedicated to the American Military - last year drawing over 10,000 spectators.

“This is the second year the parade will honor our nation’s military heroes,” said American Royal president and CEO Bob Petersen. “The American Royal Association’s mission is to support youth and education as the foundation of our country’s future. The U.S. military has made our freedom possible for generations - a freedom that also allows our farmers to provide a generous bounty to feed a grateful nation. This is our way of giving thanks for their contributions.”

Parade entries are expected to include representatives of neighboring Forts, the Marines, Missouri and Kansas National Guards, former prisoners of war from Korea and Viet Nam, disabled veterans, World War II veterans, Gold Star families, the Patriot Guard, Medal of Honor recipients, General Arter, the Honorable Ike Skelton, Major Sly James, ROTC and Jr. ROTC, 2,000 Boy Scouts of America, high school marching bands and drill teams and the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales.

Also this year, the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) will fly over the parade. More than just a collection of historic airworthy warplanes, the CAF Ghost Squadron reminds spectators of the defining moments in American military aviation.

The 88th annual American Royal Parade is presented by Cerner Corporation. “We are most appreciative of the support Cerner has always given the American Royal,” said Petersen. “They are a great Kansas City Institution and support and employ returning veterans.”

The American Royal ProRodeo will take place that evening at Hale Arena. For more information, visit www.americanroyal.com.

The American Royal Association is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation that has been a Kansas City tradition since 1899. Each year more than 270,000 people attend events at the American Royal Complex. In 2012, the Royal was able to give $1.4 million in scholarship and educational awards. In addition to its educational mission, the American Royal generates some $60 million of economic impact, $4.4 million in local tax revenues, and supports 450 jobs.
