SECULAR SUMMER CAMP SET FOR ITS INAUGURAL YEAR IN KC AREA

KANSAS CITY, MO -- Camp Quest Kansas City (CQKC), a summer camp geared toward building a community for children from secular, humanist, agnostic, atheist and other freethinking families, is kicking off its inaugural year July 6 to 10.

“Camp Quest Kansas City is an alternative to religious summer camps in the Kansas City area,” said Lindsey Burns, president of CQKC. “We provide a traditional sleep-away summer camp experience with sports, crafts, games, swimming and campfires as well as educational activities.” The activities focus on critical thinking, ethics, scientific inquiry, philosophy and comparative religion, she added.

This year’s camp theme is Deep Sea, said Bruce Lewin, CQKC programming director. “Educational programming will focus on topics such as whale evolution, light vs. chemical-based ecosystems and pond-water biodiversity,” he said. “We also plan on having the kids dissect a squid!”

In addition to the educational programming, activities include rock wall climbing and lessons in the performance art known as poi, said Sarah Hargreaves, CQKC marketing director. “We are also excited to have Sandra Meade, chair of the Kansas Equality Coalition’s Kansas City chapter, lead a discussion on diversity and acceptance the first night of camp,” Hargreaves said.

The key difference between Camp Quest KC and religious summer camps “is that we are not endorsing any particular worldview,” Burns explained. “Rather, we want to provide a place where children can explore their developing worldviews, ask questions and make friends in an environment that is supportive of critical thinking and skepticism.”
