Overland Park, KS – June 20, 2013
Get ready for great food and fun at the 2nd Annual Kansas City Kosher BBQ Competition and Festival. Set for Sunday, August 18, 2013; the festival runs from noon until 4:00 p.m. on the grounds of The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah, 12320 Nall Avenue, Overland Park, KS. Admission is free.
Twenty BBQ teams from around the country are expected to participate, with representatives from Boston, Chicago, New York and New Jersey to name a few. The Kansas City Kosher BBQ Competition and Festival differentiates itself from local and regional peers by combining authentic BBQ with adherence to strict Kosher dietary rules which prohibit pork, shellfish and even beef and chicken if not processed according to Kosher law and tradition, as well as a ban against mixing milk and meat.
There’s something for everyone with a Kosher BBQ eating experience, live musical entertainment, a Kids’ Zone, Kosher concession stands, cooking demonstrations, Kosher hot dog and pickle eating contests and more.
Proceeds from the event help make Kosher food more widely available in the community, with a portion of the money going to the Yachad Food Pantry, the JFS Food Pantry and KC Kosher Meals-on-Wheels.
The competition is open to all, regardless of faith, background or BBQ skill level. The $350.00 team entrance fee includes Kosher chicken, beef back ribs, brisket, other basic ingredients and cooking station set-up. Additionally, in order to adhere to strict Kosher rules all contestants are supplied and compete with the same model smokers.
Winners are determined by a panel of professional BBQ judges, celebrities and community leaders, among them Simon Majumdar – Author, Broadcaster & Iron Chef America Judge.
The Vaad HaKashruth of Kansas City, located in Overland Park, KS, is a not-for-profit community service organization dedicated to maintaining reliable Kosher supervision. Rabbinic and lay leaders provide Kosher certification, supervision, education and inspection for caterers, wholesale and retail food vendors, and food production companies in the Kansas City area and Midwest.
