Making Waves progressive swim lessons begin July 8, 13, & 22
Summer swim lessons utilizing a progressive new class format are offered twice in July at two locations by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District.
The new lessons are called Making Waves and have an overall goal of offering a progression of lessons which can take a swimmer from basic level skills to pre-swim team skills. This more convenient class format also takes the guesswork out of trying to determine what level you or your child should be in.
The term “progressive lessons” refers to the “concept that the child can move through the program at their own pace, learning new skills during the same session,” explained Aquatics Manager Jim Armstrong.
At the start of lessons and at the beginning of each daily session, students will be assessed to determine their appropriate level. Students potentially have the opportunity to test up to another level and move forward at their own pace. At the end of each session, students will receive a certificate to show their progress.
Making Waves includes seven youth levels, including Parent and Child, Preschool for ages three and four, an introductory/beginning level called Minnows, an intermediate level called Sea Horses, an intermediate/advanced level called Sea Turtles, and advanced level called Dolphins, and the Sharks pre-competitive level.
To find these programs in the JCPRD’s Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under preschool, youth, or adult and then under aquatics. In the catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keywords “making waves.”
Summer Making Waves lessons for preschool and youth have sessions beginning July 8, and 22, including both mid-morning and early evening class times. A number of morning swim lessons for preschool and youth are also set to start on July 13 at Roeland Park. Other summer sessions start Aug. 5. Lessons are offered at both the Roeland Park Aquatic Center, 4850 Rosewood, Roeland Park, and at the Prairie Village Pool, 7710 Delmar, Prairie Village. Making Waves swim lessons are also offered for adults at both pools.
