Missouri Geologists’ Consortium Organized
COLUMBIA, MO. – Professional geologists from all over Missouri met recently to organize the Missouri Geologists’ Consortium.
There were 19 geologists from St. Louis, Kansas City, Columbia, Jefferson City, Rolla, and Washington, Mo. Most are practicing professionals who work in different applied areas. Mining, consulting geology, engineering geology, oil and gas, earthquake geology, environmental geology, and geoscience education were all represented.
This new group will be a technical resource for Missouri legislators. Members will also monitor proposed legislation that includes geology issues in Missouri.
Duane Kreuger, branch manager of Geotechnology, Inc., in St. Louis, called the meeting. “There has been a need for a geology watchdog group like this for some time. There are a lot of issues that face our state legislature now that really need our input,” Kreuger said.
The Missouri Geologists’ Consortium is especially concerned with several bills introduced in the 2013 legislative session.
One of those bills would have weakened Missouri’s professional registration requirements. That would have allowed non-geologists to sign off on technical aspects of critical projects. Without the oversight of a professional registered geologist, clean water, stable building sites, and dam safety could be at risk.
The Missouri Geologists’ Consortium includes members of several other national and international professional groups. The new group is the only one that focuses on Missouri issues that affect public safety.
