The Johnson County NAACP presents H&R Block co-founder and his son, a former CEO at the annual Freedom Fund Banquet

Overland Park, Kansas - For their notable works of giving back to communities, the JCNAACP selects Henry Bloch, co-founder and honorary chairman of the board of H&R Block, and his son Thomas Bloch, former CEO, to be keynote speakers at the annual Freedom Fund Banquet Friday, Sept. 20, 2013.

At one time, Henry Bloch and his brother Richard were barely making a living off Bookkeeping and providing tax preparation services to customers and friends. However, their commitment to provide a service to their community remained unchanged.

One of their clients knew that there was a market for preparing tax returns. It wasn’t long before the client convinced Henry to advertise his tax preparation services through The Kansas City Star.

Soon after launching the ad, Henry and Richard were preparing numerous tax returns and H&R Block was born. It later became the world’s largest tax preparation firm with over 20 million customers. In addition to preparing tax returns, Henry Bloch gives back to his community through philanthropy and social entrepreneurship to improve the quality of life in his home town of Kansas City.

Thomas Bloch provided a service to his community in his own way. After working with his father for almost 20 years before stepping down as a CEO of H&R Block, he later decided to become an inner-city teacher. Thomas co-founded the University Academy, an urban college preparatory charter school where he taught middle school math and served as board President.

Come join the JCNAACP and listen to their keynote speakers discuss how their life experiences enabled them to give back to their community. The event will take place inside the Regnier Center at the Johnson County Community College. It is open to the public from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $65 per person.
