Brue Matthews Will Present "The Kansas City Spirit: Stories of Service Above Self" at Westport Library

On June 8, 2013 local author Bruce Matthews will present a talk on his book, The Kansas City Spirit: Stories of Service Above Self, at 2pm, at the Kansas City Public Library Westport Branch, 118 Westport Road, KCMO 64111.

Matthews' book, The Kansas City Spirit: Stories of Service Above Self, not only recalls some of the defining moments of Kansas Citians. It examines the contributions and personal stories of a few of those whose lives exemplified that Spirit.

It is not merely as a history book, but rather a how-to book for future generations of Kansas Citians… how to give back and make this community a better place in which to live. Example is a powerful force. The people profiled in this book are testimony to the fact that it does not matter whether you are rich or poor, woman or man, white or black, American Indian or Latino, young or old, Protestant, Jewish or Catholic. We all have a role to play in lifting up even the least among us. Bruce Mathews is a free-lance commercial photographer based in Kansas City. With 30 years of experience, assignments have taken him throughout the continental United States, Hawaii and Canada. He specializes in golf, medical, legal, architectural, and corporate, photography. Bruce was a 2011 recipient of The Kansas City Spirit Award. In 2010 he, along with fellow co-authors, published the award winning book, Elmwood Cemetery: Stories of Kansas City The book The Kansas City Spirit: Stories of Service Above Self is the recipient of Book of the Year Award for 2012 presented by The Jackson County Historical Society. The Westport Library Speaker Series is sponsored by the Westport Historical Society.
