OVERLAND PARK, KAN. — Children, teens, and foster parents filled Skate City in Overland Park on Saturday afternoon. As part of National Foster Care Month, TFI Family Services, Inc. (TFI) in Overland Park held an appreciation skate party for local foster families. Each TFI resource foster family in the area also received an appreciation gift of a Sonic Gift card and a slip and slide for family fun when it gets warm. TFI held this event to show appreciation for the dedication and care local foster parents show every day to youth in need. Similar appreciation and awareness events are taking place in thousands of communities across the country to celebrate the loving, caring adults who are making a positive difference in the lives of children and teens in foster care.

“They had so much fun,” said Shelly Edwards, a Resource Family Worker with TFI. “We had experienced skaters, kids who had never skated before, and our resource (foster) parents skated. It was actually a day where all they had to do was show up and we provided the entertainment and lunch.”

Foster parents make a difference in the lives of local children and teens every day. When a family experiences a crisis which renders them unable to provide the necessary care for their children, these youth find themselves in need of a loving home until they can safely return to their family or find an alternative forever home. Foster families open their hearts and homes to help these youth and their families, offering safety and security while working with child welfare professionals to try to reunite the families.

“I can guarantee when you see the change that you can make in a child's life it will be one of the best feelings you have ever had,” TFI foster parent Stacey Cowan said. “It isn't always an easy job but it is definitely worth it. You don't have to be perfect to be a foster parent, you just have to love kids.”
